AUSOMA and HVCC sign MOU to expand Higher Education Availability

Oranjestad, Aruba – February 24th, 2022 – American University School Medicine Aruba (“AUSOMA”) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY (“HVCC”) to provide further higher education opportunities for local students in Aruba and the wider Caribbean region, including a direct path to an MD program for HVCC students.  Mr. Jawad Shaikh, AUSOMA Chairman of the Board, and Dr. Roger Ramsammy, HVCC President, met with the Aruba Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Education, the honorable Endy J. H. Croes, to provide an overview of the academic program as well as benefits for Aruba and the wider Caribbean region.

Oranjestad, Aruba – February 24th, 2022 – American University School Medicine Aruba (“AUSOMA”) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY (“HVCC”) to provide further higher education opportunities for local students in Aruba and the wider Caribbean region, including a direct path to an MD program for HVCC students.  Mr. Jawad Shaikh, AUSOMA Chairman of the Board, and Dr. Roger Ramsammy, HVCC President, met with the Aruba Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Education, the honorable Endy J. H. Croes, to provide an overview of the academic program as well as benefits for Aruba and the wider Caribbean region.

With this partnership, HVCC and AUSOMA will offer an Undergraduate Program consisting of the following:

  • Provide regional Caribbean and Aruban MAVO, IPE, GED, HAVO, and high school graduate students an affordable Associate’s Degree through HVCC at AUSOMA in Aruba campus or through distance learning.
  • Provide AUSOMA Pre-Medical Students an Associate’s Degree in Biological Sciences through HVCC in AUSOMA Aruba campus or through distance learning.
  • Provide students with successful completion of a Pre-Medical program through HVCC with an option to enter the AUSOMA MD program.
  • Provide students with completing an Associate’s Degree with an option to enter State University of New York (SUNY)-affiliated schools in the USA through existing transfer policies.

“This program is a significant milestone for providing US, Aruba, and the wider Caribbean region students options to pursue US accredited higher education opportunities,” explained Mr. Shaikh. “We are excited to take this important step and formalize our relationship to strengthen cooperative relations in the areas of education and other academic activities,” he added.

In turn, Dr. Ramsammy remarked, “With our over 50 years of experience, HVCC strives to deliver exceptional quality education.  It’s great to expand the capabilities of HVCC to an internationalization process that allows these types of alliances with world-class institutions and remain at the forefront of higher education opportunities in Aruba, the Caribbean, and around the world.”
